Alteration: A Modern Update to Some 90's Dresses

My family saves EVERYTHING. I'm not sure which of my cousins passed on these dresses, clearly from the 90's Little House on the Prairies trend. WOW they are ugly. I'm guessing they were bought for a wedding, since there are two of nearly the exact same shade. I was saving them to let the kiddo play dress up around the house, but even she was not a fan. Into the donation box they languished, but then my itchy sewing brain got an idea. What if I could alter them? I set off to pick everything apart.

The skirt on the right was unsalvageable, made of some nearly threadbare fabric that had old stains on it, but the whole thing was lined, unlike the dress on the left. So I traced a bodice of a dress I knew fit the kiddo better and recut the top. I saved the lining and turned the original skirt fabric into bias binding that I used on the neckline and arm holes.

Then I took the skirt from the left dress and took out 1/3 of the fullness before attaching it to the modified bodice. It came together pretty quickly. Now everything is properly lined and the skirt is just twirly enough. The kiddo was delighted the minute she saw it. Really, that's all that matters.
